The Town of Amherst is a safe and low crime community.

The Town of Amherst Police Department has one full time Police Chief and five full-time police officers who are under the supervision of the Town Manager.  It is supported by the Amherst County Sheriff’s Department and the State Police as well as other local, state and federal agencies.

The Amherst Police Department provides exceptional public safety services by taking a leadership role in building community partnerships.

The Amherst Police Department seeks to improve the quality of life for all residents of the Town of Amherst by providing professional police services that are innovative, community-minded, and integrity-driven. In addition to enforcing Town Code ordinances and provisions of the Virginia Code, the Town of Amherst Police Department serves as the Town’s coordinating agency for fire and rescue, emergency services and a variety of other public safety issues.

The well-trained, well-educated, and highly motivated officers of the Amherst Police Department are committed to keeping our community a safe place to live, work, and visit.
